What does submission look like to you? At first I didn’t like the word. It sounded as though I was entering into bondage, losing my independency, losing my freedom. The definition for submit shredded a new light that encouraged me to dig into the scriptures. What I saw that encouraged me was “to allow oneself to be subjected to some kind of treatment” and “transfer possession of something concrete or abstract to somebody; ‘She gave the children lots of love and tender care.” this got me to pondering.
What I learned about Submit
When it comes to my husband:
- Desire – God placed a desire, a longing, a craving in my heart for him.
- Respect and Honor – By respecting him and honoring his wishes that are in line with Gods, I am placing him as head of household.
- Love – My actions and choices display what is in my heart for him and also by learning his love language.
A commentary I was reading about submit lead my over to the Proverbs 31 woman. As you know she is an example of God’s view of a godly woman. She also serves of a good example of a woman who submits is her husband. Then my mind went wandering over to a scripture my mom would use when I started grumbling.
Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praise worthy – meditate on these things. The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.” Philippians 4:8-9
When I put this verse into practice; while I am trying to be a Proverbs 31 woman towards my husband and family. I am obeying God’s command to submit to my husband. You see submitting isn’t what I thought it was. It is an attitude of desire, respect, honor and love for my husband.
