Guarding our heart is one of the best things we can do. Not just to preserve us but also to help us. God’s Word gives us a specific instruction and answers the question as to why.
“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” Proverbs 4:23 NIV
Did you see that? Everything flows from it. When your heart is broken and torn, how do you live? You put up invisible walls, blocking someones or somethings into your life so that your heart won’t be broken or torn again. When your heart is filled with lust, how do you live? You seek out more of what your heart desires to keep feeding the demands of its thirst. When your heart is fill with God and His love, how do you live? You live in a way that shares Him and you show His love to others. So how do you guard your heart? You are careful with what you do in life. Do you remember the song we sang as children?
- Of be careful little eyes what you see…
- Oh be careful little ears what you hear…
- Oh be careful little hands what you do…
- Oh be careful little feet where you go…
- Oh be careful little mouth what you say…
- There’s a Father up above, And He’s looking down in love,
- So, Be careful….
Now that I have you singing this song in your head. Isn’t it so true. What we see, hear, touch, say and where we go all influence our lives. We can do all of these while we are building our relationship with Christ. By watching wholesome programming, listening to song that lift up and praise God, serving others with our hands and saying only things that are positive and build others up. These are just a few examples of actions we can take in our life to guarding our heart. When you are filling your heart with good things there is no time or space for the bad. Let His knowledge and wisdom guide us. It will fill our hearts and we can live in His freedom and love.
What are things you do to guard your heart?
