Cursing of the Fig Tree & Clearing the Temple

With Jesus being all knowing, He did not have to walk up to the tree to see if it bears any fruit at this time due to its leave. He already knew there would be no fruit to find. His cursing the fig tree was a symbolism to learn from, for His disciples and for us today. A follower of Christ should bear the fruits of the Spirit and any who do not bear any fruit but put on appearances of a follower is not good to be feed from. A hypocrite or false teacher do not bear fruit and we have been warned through scripture to stear clear from their teachings.

Cursing of the fig tree also served as an illustration to His disciple and us about having faith in God. When they went back by the tree the next day. The disciples notice and proclaimed that the tree that Jesus had cursed, had also withered away. Jesus respond to them and also for us. Have faith in God and believe.

5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.” John 15:5-6 NIV

The Temple

When we dig into this passage we do not see Jesus entering into the temple like a madman throwing things around ranting and raving as a lunatic. No!!! what we see is Jesus entering into the temple with authority and power. He was teaching as he was clearing. He was reminding them what was written. God’s house, His house is a house of prayer. The chief priest and the teachers of the law were using His house for their own gain. His time was coming closer and He had come to purify the temple for the new covenant He was to bring through His suffering. The chief priest and the teacher of the law must have felt threatened in a new sort of way because we see this is when they began looking for ways to kill Him.

What can we take from this passage?

Our God is a jealous God. He will only let us go so far before He uses His power and authority to correct us. Followers of Jesus, believers of God, His Word is a guide for us, it teach us in the ways we should go. His suffering on the cross was to purify us and make us new in Him when we chose to believe in Him in faith and accept Him as our Lord and Savior our temple will be cleansed.

Everything that Jesus did was for the good of His follower which glorified Him and our Father, God.
