The Last Supper
Here we witness a humbling example. Jesus knew His time was coming swiftly and to show what He had been teaching to them. He takes the position of a servant and washes their feet. While in doing so He is still teaching them. As Mary washed Jesus feet with her tears out of an act of love. So did the woman who anointed Jesus head with her perfume out of an act of love. Jesus also demonstrated His love for His disciples. When we serve others we are doing unto them what Jesus demonstrated for us, to serve in love.
Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial
I love the curiosity, the boldness and the bluntness of Peter. He believes in his own faithfulness to Jesus only be told, “Really, you would lay down your life for me?” Then is preceded to be told, “In all reality before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!” Can you imagine Peter’s jaw dropping to the ground in disbelief. The thoughts that must have gone through his mind. However Jesus did not say this to him in a matter of fact way. He told him this out of love, to prepare him so when the truth of what He revealed came true. Peter would remember this and all that they were taught by Him was true.
Do you believe as Peter did that you would never deny your Lord? I would like to believe I would never do this, but the truth of the matter is I have. Does that make my Lord love me less or forgive me less? No, and the same is true for you as well. When we see the error of our ways, we can and should ask for forgiveness from the only One who is faithful and just to forgive us of our sins when we confess our sins to Him. To be a follower of Jesus, we must take up our cross daily.
“Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.” Luke 9:23 NIV
